NET 11 - Learning Log of the Advanced Internet User

Module 4 & Tasks

Using the infosphere: taking & organising

11/02/2008

As we have discussed, the most important things to look for in 'additional tools' are:

  • cost - and, indeed, in most cases look for free products
  • ease of use - can you use it easily (while recognising that you may need to learn to use programs)
  • functionality - does it do what it needs to if it is to be effective (ie if a single vital element is missing, an other wise 'good' program is useless)
  • utility - does the program increase your effectiveness (saving time, in particular, or allowing you to do something previously not done)
  • commonality - is the program becoming 'standard' or at least common.

6 of February 11, 2008

In your learning log record which programs you downloaded and note which (if any) facets you think might prove useful.

I do apologize for the unchronological order of the this log but as the situation with reinstalling the OS on my laptop I thought of redoing the module 4 tasks.

Tools for using the web

compare the two in your learning log.

I’ve downloaded the exe file as requested and allowed adobe add-ons in my mozilla browser.

2. Flash/Shockwave Players

I did have Flash and/or Shockwave.

3. Media Players

At some stage I did have all of the listed players but for this task I’ve downloaded Real One cause I already have win media player and I’m not a mac user.

I can compare winup and media player.

Usually every player that we download has a trial version or has limited features.

For this task I managed with great difficulties to download Real One and Quicktime Player because my dsl account was shaped so instead of the poor 64 KB/sec I was getting half of it.

Choose your connection speed I hesitated not to click dial-up instead of broadband because the actual speed is worse than dial-up.

Installation went with no problems. I was careful to untick the features that I won’t need or be using. I listened to the ilecture on webc.

I downloaded Quicktime Player from the ilecture site when I choose to listen with Q. It gave me the option to save the link and download for free the player.

  1. Search Manager/Combiners

Glooton link was on French so I wasn’t able to understand how much I tried so I did a search on Google but no success.

I’ve downloaded Copenic desktop search for windows.

Enlightening !

This looks very good and useful tool. Such an interesting search tool. Did search of the web and both things in my pc. You can do a search both within the web and your local folders. I tested by doing a search with the keyword ‘music’ and I got 55 matching documents.

6. Offline Browser/Copier:

I wasn’t quite surprised and didn’t find quite useful the buddybookmark or maybe I didn’t explore too much with it.

Wasn’t able to download WebCopier and PageSucker because they didn’t have a version for vista and I didn’t want to risk with the other versions.

I don’t think that I’ll be using any of those so I didn’t even try searching for other compatible tools.

PS. I’m still giving vista a chance although she didn’t make my life easier in a contrary made my life worse.

search engine task

For this task I’m going to use my main primary web search engine Google and Copernic. From the discussion board I’ve learned about others such Incywincy, CompletePlanet.com...
I used Clusty, Vivisimo
With the help of the discussion board I realised that it is ok that I couldn’t find to set Coperning to search with three web engines including the deep web.

My key word was FTP – File transfer protocol

Boolean

For this task I needed to make the best search with my required key word therefore I used the Boolean logic for searching on the Internet. I couldn’t do much search for academic sources cause the nature of the actual FTP
My key words were ‘file transfer protocol NOT internet tools’.
I got what I needed with getting the most relevant information.
My result :

http://www.iucr.org/cww-top/int.ftp.gen.html
http://www.techtrainteam.com/services/olt/internet/ftp-0.html
http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc959
http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc2389

I can’t say that they are academic but all of them except the Wikipedia one I can use as reference.

I wonder why Google gave me Wikipedia result with SSH file transfer protocol instead of just FTP.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SSH_file_transfer_protocol

  • the biggest number of hits relating to these key words

ftp NOT internet tools 174,000

file transfer protocol OR FTP 3,230,000

internet tools AND FTP 747,000

internet tools OR ftp 748,000

Very interesting is to note that FTP and file transfer protocol gives different numer of result

FTP 276,000,000

File transfer protocol 4,420,000

For my annotaded bibliography I mainly searched for academic sites on the Oasis Gecko Database. That was very convenient and easy and in short time I found qualitative resource that I needed.
I will conclude that I need to do more practice to manage through other search engines to manage to do the same.

I chose Technology Training Team because it’s a company with over 20 years experience in developing and training in elementary, secondary and

university level. It's staff is composed by educators with over 50 years of experience.

For the nature of the company, the purpose of the website is to inform, never to persuade, visitors to buy a specific product or anything else.

References are not provided but there's a link to contact the technical team.

Content is always neutral, not written to persuade or influence visitors.

There's no info about "update date" but for the topic I'm talking about, FTP, there's no need to check info against any date since the article it's

about general introduction and principles haven't changed since its creation.

Many websites link to www.techtrainteam.com (On Google type: “link: www.techtrainteam.com”)

http://searchnetworking.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid7_gci213976,00.html

Searchnetworking is one of the largest online communities dedicated to enterprise networking. Even though the website is filled with advertisements it’s considered one of the best website for IT related news, technical tips and valuable tests on both hardware and software.

Info are short but clear and even though there are not references available, they do show many technical articles about the same topic to give the opportunity to the visitors to compare the info against different sources.

The “last updated date” is always at the end of the article.

The website has many websites linking to it (On Google type:

“link: searchnetworking.techtarget.com”)

Module 3 & Tasks

Contributing to the Infosphere: e-writing?

19/01/2008

This was a very new experience for me so I've copied and pasted some important things from the module so I can refer to them later.

Jakob Nielsen's Alertbox for October 1, 1997:

How Users Read on the Web

  • highlighted keywords (hypertext links serve as one form of highlighting; typeface variations and color are others)
  • meaningful sub-headings (not "clever" ones)
  • bulleted lists
  • one idea per paragraph (users will skip over any additional ideas if they are not caught by the first few words in the paragraph)
  • the inverted pyramid style, starting with the conclusion
  • half the word count (or less) than conventional writing

Combined version
using all three improvements in writing style together: concise, scannable, and objective 124% !!!!!!!!!!

http://www.dartmouth.edu/%7ewebteach/articles/text.html

Writing style

  • Summarize first. Put the main points of your document in the first paragraph, so that readers scanning your pages will not miss your point.
  • Be concise. Use lists rather than paragraphs, but only when your prose lends itself to such treatment. Readers can pick out information more easily from a list than from within a paragraph.
  • Write for scanning. Most Web readers scan pages for relevant materials rather than reading through a document word by word. Guide the reader by highlighting the salient points in your document using headings, lists, and typographical emphasis.

Chunking

  • Access. Your content list should already be composed of information chunks, because the definition of a content item is any piece of information that needs to be accessed individually. Consider how users will interact with your materials: What items will they want to access directly? Define your information chunks to accommodate the expected usage patterns of your users.
  • Page length. Chunking provides a way to limit the length of your Web pages: Web readers generally prefer shorter pages. Don't arbitrarily divide a document, however, and don't divide a document that is likely to be printed anyway (see next entry).
  • Printing. Don't break your narrative into small segments if you expect that most users will want to print the information. Documents are easier to print from a single Web page. Or, if usage is difficult to predict, offer both a Web version and a link to an easy-to-print page or printing alternative, such as a downloadable PDF file.

There are also hazards to watch for when chunking information:

  • Fragmentation. Be careful not to over-subdivide your information. If you break up your information into many small chunks, your readers will be overwhelmed and frustrated by too many choices. You will also find it hard to create a coherent narrative if the information chunks are too specific to make sense out of context.
  • Redundancy. If you provide a comprehensive narrative for each information segment, you are going to be redundant. Don't resort to an incomplete presentation of your materials or to excessive use of links (see next entry) in order to avoid repeating yourself. It's okay - even necessary - to be redundant when writing for the Web.
  • Excessive linking. Web authors often try to avoid redundancy by using links. Instead of providing a full account on one page, they sprinkle the page with links to other pages, either within their site or elsewhere. These linked pages are employed to supply the reader with the context needed to understand the materials. A well-constructed information chunk, however, provides a complete account of the subject, with an appropriate amount of background, and links to pages providing supporting information. Readers should not have to follow links to gain an understanding of the information; the links are for those who wish to pursue the topic, or some aspect of the topic, further.

Page length

Links

  • Visual distraction. Colored and underlined text within body text pulls the eye by disrupting the uniformity of the text block. If you place a link within a paragraph, the user's eye will be drawn to the link. Many users will click on that link directly without ever reading the text that forms its context.
  • Disruption of narrative. Links lead to stories half-told. If halfway though your account you offer a link to another site, users may follow the link (and another link and another) and never return to your site.
  • Lack of context. When readers follow a link, they move from the contextual framework of your site into unfamiliar territory. Users also may not be able to ascertain the connection between the materials on your site and the linked site. This plunge from the known to the mysterious can frustrate and bewilder users.

HTML tags

For this task I went through the html tutorials and managed with big excitement to create my first html. I uploaded my html together with my foto in the presentation page.
For the first time looked easy and interesting creating the things that a simple user doesn't understand but it made me think if I am going to be able to do this most of the time.

Combined version

Important ‘rules’ for writing online:

  1. On the very first view page should look simple and neat but concise and deep on the other hand to give the information or to tell the story.
  2. Keywords and type techniques
  3. Links within the context of information or full story

http://www.rebeccablood.net/handbook/excerpts/weblog_ethics.html

1. Publish as fact only that which you believe to be true.

2. If material exists online, link to it when you reference it.

3. Publicly correct any misinformation.

4. Write each entry as if it could not be changed; add to, but do not rewrite or delete, any entry.

5. Disclose any conflict of interest.

6. Note questionable and biased sources.

I tried validating my html on W3C and got error Forbidden as it was noted in the tutorial.

Html is copyrighted by me :) and doesn't break any privacy laws. The foto included is in my ownership.

After the loss of my complete D:drive with amost 12 GB I needed to take some action to fix my laptop cause I've realised the importance of having it. I need to take care of it as he is of a grait use for me.

I didn't manage uploading my html on the oasis page due to very slow connection and lack of time. I did ping test and I am receiving only 2 packages out of 4. I am changing my plan from tomorrow.
GB have becomed MB.

30/01/2008

I have thoughts of changing blogger into some other host just to test but there was not time for it. I had issues posting my annotaded bibliography and didn't wanted the same to happen. The formating is the problem inspite of the goot tools that blogger has.

Communicating in the Infosphere

Email Tasks

It never happened to me that I received attachment that I never decoded maybe because all of my senders use windows and mainly send me extensions that are widely used. I sure have received emails with missing attachments and I was wondering how the person managed to lose the attachment. I know that by clicking forward you can include the attachment in your email but it made me think how this attachment got lost. It can be due to different mail clients, the extension of the file or simply the person didn’t include the file/attachment. I never had any issues with recipients not been able to open attachments except when the recipient has limited user applications and simply can’t open that extension file. From there on I usually send standard file extensions.

Today I posted my opinion on the discussion board about

What are the pros and cons of email lists versus discussion boards?

Are there certain kinds of communication or purposes more suited to one than the other?

Author: Angelina Dimovska-Cicimova Date: Saturday, December 29, 2007 09:40

Took me long time to get to some pros and cons about discussion boards

and email lists manly cause I've never used them before so up to this

moment I can't tell much, just my short term beginner experience.

Discussion board looked very informative and interesting at the

beginning, than I got used to it so I was consuming the posts easy but

now not anymore. Now it annoys me that it looks a little bit unorganized

& confusing because lots of same issues are spread by different subjects

but they are talking about the same issues. Very time consuming.

At some stage I was spending too much time trying to understand the

problems and solutions that I've never faced with therefore I've find a

way to have a quick informational look at the discussion board and

really post something if it's necessary.

Most of the time I feel this pressure writing about something just

because I need to be included & show interest. I do read the discussion

board but sometimes I'm not able to help or don't have anything to comment.

Lists & Newsgroups bring the message or information needed more clearly

in a way just because of their structure. It takes time while getting

them & the info might be old but I can't lose track & I'm better

organized. Was hard finding the right filed of interest because lots of

adverts and spam but will explore further...

Angelina

Sender is the origin of a message but in cases email has been forwarded we can see all the senders in the body or where it all began. If it was

Lists

I did my list after long refusal and showing no interest about it. I simply would like to get to the desired information in a faster possible way and less time spend infront of the laptop.

http://lists.topica.com/dir/?cid=159

I’ve created a login & selected entertainment from the directory and went to food & drink.

Joined Read 'em and Weep Food Facts (Read 'em & Weep)

With enormous support and help from David J. who I need to give a medal for his knowledge, excellent teaching methods, time effort I joined group on google

I joined Macedonia J

Later I found out that it was a politically oriented group and it a certain question of the name of my origin country. Didn’t have much luck so I unsubscribed. No issues with unsubscribing.

I found another Macedonian group and I try joining. They asked for a membership.

Memebership!!!!!!!!!!

I’ve send short message to inform that I’m former student of them & would like to get approval to be a member

Waiting…

Was surprised how much stuff it has for everything else except topic related things. I didn’t find anything interesting to read.

I never received membership from this group. After a while I received an email asking me who I am and why do I need this membership. I was surprised of the way of communication J

After thorough explanation what I study and the purpose of the task I received a nice respond that basically the group was created just for the purposes of students of a course but they never got to use it.

That was a quite funny experience.

28/12/07

Today I’ve received my first group mails! Very pleased. I’ve created a folder & created a rule so all the emails from that sender to go to the folder. There was 1 new message so I went through.

Chat

ICQ

I’ve been using ICQ for a long time so I already had an account

  • find the ICQ number for the nickname advanced netstudies

Found & added! Strange icon, little man walking instead of flower

  • add ‘advanced netstudies’ to your contact list and note whether it is authorized automatically

Authorized automatically. No authorisation

  • look at the user info for advanced netstudies and note the comment in the ‘about’ section

There is no ‘about’ in user info. Is this a trick? I know how about looks but there is nothing there.

Email Task

For this task I had open my oasis email account and my microsoft outlook which has my gmail account configured. I have read and reviewed all the basic email functions with the Email Tutorial given in the module.

Answers to quiz questions

http://peoplesearch.lycos.com/
I've searched for Angelina Dimovska Sydney knowing that the search is for USA. In the results I got 3 persons named Angelce Dimovska :) I've clicked to see Advanced Locater and there were charges to pay to get those info. It was interesting to see that besides the
Advanced Locator
you can get
Instant Criminal Search and Background Check.
I found the all product search

but couldn't find if I can find email contact.

1. What information about a user's email, the origin of a message, and the path it took, can you glean from an email message?

From the email above I can see firstly that it's a mail I'm receiving dayly due to my subscription. It is in my safe list although gmail isn't that sensitive to receiving emails.
There is an option 'show details' located next to the sender address that expands the informations for this email. From this email I can see that

2. In what cases would you find it useful to use the 'cc', 'bcc' and 'reply all functions of email?

'CC' or carbon copy is a function useful for including people that would find that email or information send useful or simply including other people. For formal purposes, a t work for example I would use CC to include my manager or team leader when I address to my colleagues when communicating over work related issues. I would include my agent when asking for a permition for a day off or holiday from my manager.
'BCC' or blanco carbon copy gave me lots of fun when I first discovered by receiving email that wasn't address to me but the sender has send it to himself :)
I use bcc with when I send some email to many recipients so others wont be able to see all my contacts. Simply a privacy thing.

3. In what ways can you ensure that an attachment you send will be easily opened by the receiver?

The attachments I usually send are mainly photos. What I am careful of is the size firstly and the format. My photos are jpeg format
I'm annoyed receiving pps files so I never send them.

4. What sorts of filters or rules do you have set up, and for what purpose?

My mail client is Outlook 2003 and I have both my gmail accounts configured.

5. How have you organised the folder structure of your email and why?

Gmail has one disadvantage that has no folders so you can't quite organise your emails in folders and make them more neat and easily found. Gmail has the function to

Outlook 2003
I had folders with created rules that perfectly give me organisation. What a useful tool

ICQ task

According to module 2 task I've used the search by name field and typed
adv.net
Just one account appeared with no info.
With the threads, tutor & David I found out that there was a different account so I've searched for it with the number provided.

I couldn't join organised chat meeting 6th of Jan cause I was away on holiday but hopefully will attend to next one

NEWSGROPS
OUTLOOK!!!!!!!!!

Make a difference between list & newsgroup!

No experience with all 3

Issues with pc, D drive wiped off together with my outlook.
All folders…years of organised mail material gone!
I've started outlook 2003 again & returned to module task 2.
Create filter & newsgroups!!!!

After going through the useful thread with subj:lists - are they worth it... From module 2
I've decided to join freecycle group on yahoo. By clicking first on the link provided from Shan on request of DJ, I visited the site and click go to. I've noticed that it's a yahoo provided group and asked for my account when I clicked join. Then I tried through join button and it generated email with the address. Email sent from my gmail account.

Please confirm your request to join freecycle_sydneycentral received!
Than I remembered of my yahoo account and registered with that. There are 3 steps to easely join.I'm in!
Now I'm thinking of the things I have to give just to be able to test & post something ;)

Today I've sent an email to my tutor asking to get some feedback about my work on the DB. I got a good feedback.

Getting started, Welcome and Introduction

Hello!

Firstly I needed a lot of time to organize myself and manage with all this very new way of studying.
I've spent lots of time re-reading the discussion board, material and chatting with other students on MSN just collecting as much information as I can instead of taking baby steps and better organizing myself.
Anyway yesterday I've sent my introduction & few posts on the discussion board and sent emails to our tutor regarding the requested task and private email about the group blog.

Today I had some issues which email should we use in our communication, the WebCT or the OASIS Curtin one and still waiting for an answer.

In brief I should start getting serious and do some work in this Learning Log :)

Module 1 & Tasks

Telnet

It was interesting to find out that there is a complicated way to find telnet because I've always used start>run>telnet or 'windows'+R and type 'telnet'.
I already had Telnet on my laptop, there was no need to install.
I wasn't able to access library.deakin.edu.au after several attempts and wasn't worried cause I've already read that some of the students had the same issue so I'll retry later. I've tried directly accessing from the run prompt. Success!!!
First task finished, email sent!

I've known http://centralops.net/co/ due to the nature of my job & used this tools but haven't studied in depth. I'm familiar with tracerouts, nslookup, DNS and pinging. I use it often at work when troubleshooting with customers for no dataflow. Basically we need to collect this information to be able to diagnostic the problem and escalate to a higher level support.
It was easy for me to complete this task.

Annotated Bibliography - Being an advanced Internet User

MODULE 1

Internet tools

Annotation 1:

Resources for IT Professionals. (n.d.).Retrieved December 4, 2007, from http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb491071.aspx

This is an excellent web site provided by Microsoft for resources including internet tools. Even thought it titles Resources for IT Professionals it has the internet tools that were scoped in the module 1: telnet, ping, ftp, tracert etc. This resource can provide clear information of the specific internet tool and can be useful for further exploration and use of the other commands.
This resource is provided from Microsoft, leader in software and information technology. Its relevance and accuracy can be verified because Microsoft is authority. In comparisment with other websites it provides the same instructions.
The site has Command-line reference from A-Z on the left hand side and by clicking on the desired hyperlink you will get a detailed information about the relevant command. For example by clicking on the ping link you will read definition what is ping including the syntax and parameters and their meanings. Under remarks it’s explained the use and results of pinging. At the end the example of pinging website and the output.

Annotation 2:

Nixon, J.(2002). Using Traceroute. Retrieved December 4, 2007, from http://www.exit109.com/~jeremy/news/providers/traceroute.html

Jeremy Nixon is the author of this site. Regarding the relevance and accuracy this site was last updated 2 September 2002.
It's about using traceroute with clear examples. I found it very useful, clearly and easy explained therefore would recommend to a beginner in getting familiar with using this internet tool.
This tool was studied in module 1 and requested a specific task to perform.
Divided in ten subtitles it gives explanation and examples for running a trouceroute, reading the output, tracing from elsewhere, using ping, under the hood and finding the problem for timeouts, long routes, high round-trip times, routing weirdness.

MODULE 2

Communicating in the Infosphere

Annotation 1:

Wicker G. Jr.(2005). E-Mail Etiquette. Retrived December 10, 2007, from http://www.iwillfollow.com/email.htm

This is a very useful and easily understandable site about e-mail etiquette. It provides basic instructions in a form of guide how to use e-mail. The site provides a link at the bottom to a pdf file of the same document.
The author is Wicker Gene Jr Copyright I wil follow…services last revised January 2005.
This document doesn’t give any relevant reference therefore there is no way of checking the accuracy of the provided guide however in comparisment of the tutorial and other explored websites looks very accurate.
In addition of the tutorial for module 2 it explains in depth one of the most popular way of communicating today – email.
Besides providing instructions of using to, cc, bcc, reply, reply all
It’s manly made for general basic information.
Emails are classified as synchronous as explained in concept 1 as introducing the email as opposite of asynchronous. More about netiquette is explained in concept 7.

Smith, M.A., Farnham, S. D., & Drucker, S. M. (n.d.). The Social Life of Small Graphical Chat Spaces. Retrieved January 23, 2008, from http://209.85.173.104/search?q=cache:DAr9jYM9VrsJ:research.microsoft.com/~masmith/The%2520Social%2520Life%2520of%2520Small%2520Graphical%2520Chats.doc+social+impact+of+chats&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=3&gl=au

This website is an analysis of the social dynamics of three Microsoft chat rooms. The research shows how interaction between distant people are translated into social interaction in an online environment. According to this research participants interact using gestures, avatars, and movement. As shown by the survey, chat participants use these features to enhance their social interactions. In conclusion the research shows that online interactions occur very similarly to physical interactions; participants tend to stand and look towards whom they are chatting to and they keep some personal space.
We can relate this site to the part of the module 2 where we explore several chat programs as important ways of communications in the infosphere.
There is no information about the authors Marc A. Smith, Shelly D. Farnham, and Steven M. Drucker but from the url I would say that the survey might have been commissioned by Microsoft, leader in software and informatical technology. Its accuracy is provided from the survey and data gathered between 22 October 1998 and 16 January 1999, a total of 119 days, in three Microsoft chat rooms.
This is a very useful research and intended for people interested in how online social interactions have changed with the introduction of graphical chats instead of plain text chats.
I can relate this resource to Concept 14 as it explains the cyberspace but it’s more related to Concept 17.

MODULE 3

Contributing to the Infosphere: e-writing?

Tchernov, T. (n.d.).Privacy issues with blogging. Retrived January 14, 2008 from http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/courses/compsci705s1c/assignments/StudentResearchReports/Privacy%20issues%20with%20blogging%20(ktch003).pdf

This study by Konstantin Tchernov from University of Auckland, New Zealand talks about privacy issues with blogging.
In the introduction author states that blogs, short for web logs, are an easy way to publish information on the web. Such information could be about personal lives, independent news, reviews of products etc. Quoting different studies, the author goes through the most common issues bloggers can face such as: privacy loss, privacy risks, and privacy protections. One of the study shows that there have been various cases of employees been fired because of negative blogging about their work place or bloggers who had trouble because of writing about their private life. Another study reports that there have been teenage girls contacted by online stalkers. According to the last study teenage girls are the biggest demographic group of bloggers because 15% of bloggers are teenagers and 56% of them are female at the time of the survey in 2005. Basically bloggers might get in trouble for revealing their personal information. Although there are different protection methods such are password protections or user registration to the blog, the author concludes that these solutions are not always effective. Most of the problems are caused by improper utilization of technology or because of blogger’s carelessness about the information they publish and he advices that the best way to avoid privacy issues is not writing to many personal information.
This research is related to the topic of the module four and relates to the
Concept 26 explaining the privacy and security.

This study is about the privacy in the users of Facebook and the many flaws found. The study dates from December 14, 2005 and it can be taken as accurate at that time of the research. The study looks pretty reasonable according to the provided reference. It would be interesting to see new studies about this problem.
Thy study and survey show analysis of exposing personal information and explaining the steps of protecting that data on Facebook..The main point of the statistics taken from Facebook reviles that outsiders are searching for information even though the users have chosen ‘My Privacy’ feauture.
The examiners were students of few universities in USA who used Facebook.
This study can be addressed to everyone who uses this kind of programs and expose privacy informations.
It explains how Facebook obtain data from the registered users providing graphs, tables and charts. Students are creating their profile before joining campus and the undergraduate or most active ones expose most information. It’s interesting to note that the majority is not familiar with the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy and has never read them. Further in the study they explain about the new risks involving the expansion of Facebook and compairing with MySpace.
The authors have concluded that the less information is revealed in Facebook profile the better protection and privacy there can be.
Comparing the privacy of Facebook and blogs I can conclude that they are advising the same – being cautious and aware in providing personal information as basic protection.

Harris, R.(2000). Evaluating Internet Research Sources. Retrieved January 23, 2008, from
http://www.virtualsalt.com/evalu8it.htm

This is a very useful summary of evaluating internet research sources by Robert Harris. It’s related to the fourth module and expands the knowledge and provides useful information of how to evaluate sites in stages including tips and examples presented in a very simple and easy understandable language.
This resource stands for its accuracy and credibility as the author is writer and educator with years of experience in academic level. It can be useful for students or anyone who would like to evaluate their resources.
In the introduction the author gives information of the wide range of information on the internet through a simple example of buying a magazine in a grocery shop. By screening and testing of the information quality the author introduces with the CARS checklist ( Credibility, Accuracy, Reasonableness, Support). Each of them is explained in detail and supported with indicators of lack of the same. Credibility includes author’s credentials ,evidence of quality control and metainformation. The things we need to check to determine the accuracy are: timeliness, comprehensiveness and audience and purpose. Fairness, objectivity, moderateness, consistency and world view are related to checking the reasonableness of the resource. The last on the check list is giving support with source documentation or bibliography, corroboration or conformability and external consistency. At the end the author gives an advice in form of CAFÉ advice to challenge information, adapt doubts, file gained new information and constantly evaluate.

Module 2

It was interesting to see that besides the Advanced Locator
you can get Instant Criminal Search and Background Check.
I found the all product search
http://www.ussearch.com/consumer/allproducts.jsp?searchFName=Angelina&searchMName=&searchLName=Dimovska&searchCity=Sydney&searchState=&searchApproxAge=31&
but couldn't find if I can find email contact.

I often use BCC when sending

NET 11 - Learning Log of the Advanced Internet User

29/11/07

Getting started, Welcome and Introduction

Firstly I needed a lot of time to organize myself and manage with all this very new way of studying.
I've spent lot's of time re-reading the discussion board, material and chating with other students on MSN just collecting as much informations as I can instead of taking baby steps and better organizing myself.
Anyway yesterday I've sent my introduction & few posts on the discussion board and sent emails to our tutor regarding the requested task and privat email about the group blog.

FTP

I managed to easily download and connect to the server. No problems with login. Having troubles finding the file. Reading the guide...using the tutorial, actually trying to find what I'm a missing in my mission to find README file.
It was readme.txt
Not funny for a beginner

* ATTENTION MAC, OS/2, MS-DOS and MS-WINDOWS users:

This server runs on a unix platform, so CAPITALIZATION MATTERS!
A file named "file.txt" IS NOT THE SAME as "FILE.TXT"

Internet Tools

I've known http://centralops.net/co/ due to the nature of my job & used this tools but haven't studied in depth. I'm familiar with tracerouts, nslookup, DNS and pinging. I use it often at work when troubleshooting with customers for no dataflow. Basically we need to collect this information to be able to diagnostic the problem and escalate to a higher level support.
It was easy for me to complete this task.

What are the pros and cons of email lists versus discussion boards? 26/12/07

Are there certain kinds of communication or purposes more suited to one than the other?

Yes ,there are.

1. What information about a user's email, the origin of a message, and the path it took, can you glean (collect gradually from various sources) from an email message? 25/12/07

Sender is the origin of a message but in cases email has been forwarded we can see all the senders in the body or where it all began. If it was

2. In what cases would you find it useful to use the 'cc', 'bcc' and 'reply all functions of email?

Carbon Copy is useful to use in various cases such are including all of the interested partyues in the communications manly.
